245 starting ok now 200

my wagon had been starting rough after the new egnine was put in. Whenever I'd do a cold start the starter would make a horrendous click and grinding noise and the engine would jump. Then a 2nd attempt would start it just fine but it would idle rough. At the time I had 93 octane in but it was mixed with older gas. Now that I've filled up with a new full tank of 93 I added a bottle of Gumout engine cleaner. After a few days the engine now starts quick and the first time with no terrible noises and the idle is a bit better. Would 93 octane and engine cleaner have fixed the starting issue? Granted the engine still has the valve clatter clicking noise but perhaps another tank of 93 will cure that.
