Wiring fry 700 1990

Yesterday I noticed smoke coming out from under the drivers side of the hood, so I pulled over to take a look. The large wiring harness that runs back to the firewall had some sort of short and melted a big section of the rubber sheath that surrounded the wiring bundle. I'm sure that some of the wiring inside is shot, and the car now won't start. I have a really sick feeling this is going to be way too expensive to get repaired and the car is basically dead. Can anybody advise as to what I might be looking at repair-wise?
