putting in new battery 200 1989

I know this may sound like a silly question, but is there any precations I need to take when installing a new battery? I know it must be an easy task. My battery is due for a change, and I happen to have an almost new AutoZone battery that I took out from my now departed '83 240 wagon. Now, I just can't remember what the orderly steps are in changing a battery. Is it NEG first? The battery seems to be held down by something. How do I dislodge it from the holder and take out battery? Thanks!
