power antenna 700

My old power antenna was broken on my '87 740 T wagon. I just installed a new antenna (meaning mast with teethed nylon line). I made sure that there are not old parts left in the spiral. The antenna moves nice in and out pulling/pushing the antenna in and out without the e-motor installed. Once the motor is installed and hooked up, the antenna retracts completely, but doesn’t come out when I turn on ignition or radio. The radio is not the original one, by the way. How does the unit know in what position the antenna is - is there anything to adjust?? I couldn't figure that out even after reading FAQ. Or is it some kind of electrical problem?
