Tank Strainer collapsing? 140-160

I considered that as well but I haven't checked it. I actually called a mechanic and asked him if that could be the problem but he said most likely not. I asked him if I was to unscrew that piece if gas would spill out all over my face. I know that in the manual it says to do it on a low tank but my car won't run long enough for the tank to get low! So in your experience did you lose alot of fuel or is it in a sectioned off portion of the tank?
