ECU Failure Symptoms ' 89 240

When the pink labeled 561 ECU fails it is usually a fault that no longer provides a ground for a circuit that provides power to the fuelpump relay. The engine will crankover with the starter but not start. If you jumper fuses 4 and 6 (run a wire that connects them)the car will start up and run fine. As soon as the jumper is disconnected the car will fuel starve and stall.

Many times this same exact behavior can be caused by a bad fuel pump relay. The jumper causes the fuelpumps to run. So if you car will run only when the jumper is in place it could be the fuelpump relay or perhaps the ground fault in the ECU.

To be sure which one you can exchange the fuelpump relay with a known good one. If the car then starts without a jumper the fuelpump relay you removed is probably the cause of your earlier no start. If the car will not start with the replacement fuelpump relay in place it could be the ECU not providing the needed ground.

Be aware that as long as you have that jumper between 4 and 6 the fuelpumps will run- even with the keys in your pocket so disconnect it when you shut the car off.
