Alternator Questions 120-130

The AMP light wasn't lying after all. Yesterday, I went to start up the Amazon to find that I had a nearly dead battery. Too dead to start. I was never able to get the 1975 140/240 alternator tested (local shop couldn't figure it out. I did pull the brush assembly and found the lower brush was badly worn. The other looked good. I have no idea how to test a voltage regulator, so until I find a good replacement, I'm working with the assumption that badly worn brush was the culprit.

Bushes are easy to replace, as long as you can find them. This leads to my questions.

I found a new brush assembly for about $20.00. I could buy it, but I'd rather just replace the brushes themselves. I was diging through the boxes of parts I was given when I bought the car and found several sets of brushes. I think they are for the original generator, but the size and shape look about the same as the alternator brushes. Are these incompatable?

Also, in looking for replacement brushes, I mainly found Voltage regulator bush asssemblys. Can I bolt one of these integrated VR's onto my 1975 alternator (it looks like it'd replace the original brush set perfectly).

Finally, on some of the rebuilt 55 amp alternator of this type, there' some sort of capacitor (or something) bolted to the middle of the alternator and secured to the B+ post. Mine did not have one, but there was no indication that it had been removed prior to my purchasing it. What is that part, and could it be part of my problem?
