How to tell OD relay is bad 200 1985

Hello,

My '85 240 will not go into overdrive. I really want to drive my car on the highway...
The relay behind the dash clicks when I press the OD button, but I do not hear a click coming from the solenoid underneath the car. Does this mean that the relay is good and solenoid bad? If the solenoid is bad, how do I explain the repair in simple terms...I need to tell my spanish speaking mechanic what the problem is.
