Help. How to tell if auto trans needs a locking torque converter or not

I have a trans that I pulled out of the junkyard; the torque converter was already pulled. I have a bad trans in my car, and I want to use my torque converter; I have been warned that I need to make sure both transmissions take the same type of torque converter, but I can't find any obvious markings on them that designate this. My car is an '89 244 and I got the trans out of an '88 745.
Thank you in advance.
