Idle Control Valve 501 vs 520 700

With respect to the Idle Control Valve for the 87 740. In postings 501 valve’s vs. 520’s I see a lot of, this "should" work, and you "should" have no problems with that one. But as of yet no definitive answers as to what will work and what will not and why! What are the differences in the valves? Where will one work and not the other and why? And very important “WHAT IS THE SOURCE” I don’t want to offend all the great help, however I need a little more than “it’ll work yup” on this.
Thanks
