interesting speedo issue - mechanical or electrical 700

'87 740T

I have had a speedo problem for a while. The majority of the time the speedo does not work but will intermittently come on with the correct speed reading....for a while and then die again.
My odometer has always worked, even when the speedometer does not read, so I do not suspect the speed sensor or the wiring from the rear end.

I have suspected the capacitor (which is covered in the FAQ) but found the following :

If driving along with the needle at 0 km/hr, if I depress the trip odometer reset button, the speedometer comes alive!! What does this mean?

Any ideas of where to look.

Also, every now and then when I first turn on the car, the voltage gauge, fuel gauge and temp sensor seem to stick at their zero positions. A slight finger flick on the plastic cover brings them alive...ground issue?? If I leave them long enough they will come alive themselves within a few kilometers.

Thanks for your help
Matt
