Thanks for pointers on tranny swap: Tranny will not swap...I think

Well it took me awhile to find the little ID plate on the trannys that had baked on black gunk: I had sprayed the little plate with brake cleaner and it didn't get much cleaner until I started scraping it, and then I discovered that it was the ID tag: well the tranny I got from the junkyard was a AW 03 70L and the tranny in my car is just a AW 03 70. The problem is that I didn't get the torque converter with the tranny from the junkyard and so I can't use the tranny I got. I think that I could use the tranny if I got the right torque converter? Is the gearing different?
They look pretty much the same and I am so glad that people on this board told me to check everything first and to look for the L's, or lack thereof, on both trannys before trying the swap...
Thank you very much.
BTW the junkyard will take the tranny back within 30 days, and it had already been pulled.
Is the "L" tranny newer or older? I have a friend with an early '80 240 and I am wondering if this tranny would fit his car.
