Meltdown :( 900 1991

Hi ~ it's been a long time since i was here! i missed this place!

Anyway, I turned on my A/C for the first time this year about 2 weeks ago (because it was like 90 degrees!) and after about 2 mintues, i started to smell burning plastic...then i saw some smoke coming from under the hood and also coming into the cab! I turned the A/C off and rolled down the windows (my blinkers quit working), called my mechanic and asked him what i should do... mind you, i had just left his place about 3 minutes before from my 120,000 mile service ($420.)
After I made it back to the garage and we opened the hood, it seemed like there was a short coming from the A/C compressor that melted up into the wiring harnesses. i left the car there with him. my questions are this:
1. is my car ever going to be the same?
2. my mechanic has a wiring harness on "back order" - since it's a 1991, how does a 14 year old wiring harness become on "back order?"
3. how can i not be afraid any more?? i am so worried that my car is done in.

anyone else have these wiring harnesses switched out/repaired, etc. and how did it turn out?
someone please make me feel better......I've had to rent a KIA for the last 2 weeks and i'm going insane!!!!

thanks :)
cheers,
