Turbo exhaust system intermediate/axle pipe connection 200

How do the intermediate/axle pipes fit together on the turbo cars? Nice tight fit? A little loose?
You see, I decided to try and be clever (it never works) and save a few bucks on a 2.25" exhaust. I examined the stock 2" system on my '80 and looked at pictures of the turbo exhaust and the IPD kit and ended up buying a turbo axle pipe, muffler and tail pipe plus assorted clamps/hangers from FCPGroton. From another source I got a straight section of 2.25" exhaust pipe and a 2.25" i.d. x 2" i.d. reducer. The reducer will go on the end of the short intermediate pipe that follows the cat. It's a good fit. Then the straight section will go from the reducer to the axle pipe. It's also a good fit to the reducer. But I was shocked to find that the connection at the front of the turbo axle pipe is way too big for the straight tube. When centered there looks to be about a 1/16" gap all the way around. I was expecting a slip fit. So what's the deal? Am I incorrect in assuming that the o.d. of the turbo intermediate pipe is 2.25" at it's tail end? Is it just a tad larger at that point to provide a tight fit? Or is there some sort of gasket that is used at this connection? I have not seen such a thing listed with the other parts. I don't see how any clamp or even two at this location is going to work properly. It seems like a huge gap to have to close.
My little scheme would work except for this one problem.
