No crank. Starter Problem? (93, 240)

Hello all,

I'm wondering if I might have a starter problem, or possibly something electrical.

My 240 began acting tempermental yesterday. At first it wouldn't crank. Then when put into "neutral" it cranked up. This morning it started up in "park", but now won't crank again. This time around, though, a burnt smell came up though the gear shift box. After removing the cover, I see nothing visually wrong there.

Until the 'burning smell thing' happened, I was thinking I had a starter problem. Now I'm not so sure. The battery seems fine, and I've checked the connections which also appear good.

Anything else I can do to narrow it down to the starter? Is there anything electrical that might be fooling the car into thining the gear shift is in "drive" and hence won't let it crank?

Thanks for the help,

Andy
