Charged my ac. Some things went right, need help with what went wrong! 200 1990

Took a short cut and recharged the ac with 134a.I have a full conversion kit but decided to cut corners. The car was evacuated and recharged with 134a last summer by a local garage. So instaed of adding the full kit I added some leak detector dye and some 134a.Since the charge was so low the clutch would not engage.I jumpered the wires and everything started working ok.High side 165.low side only 18psi.Now come the problems.I removed the jumper wire-car off and ac off-reattached the wires to the dryer. When I started the ac the compressor clutch would not engage. Is the switch replaceable by itself? Or am I going to have to discharge the system again.
Tool observation: Mastercool flex and glow true UV light and glasses.Good tool from Autozone, small light beam but easy to see and great in tight spots.
US General 134a manifold gauges from Harbor Frieght.Good sturdy gauge set,BUT the high side snap coupling would not easily snap over the fitting. I need to tap it with a hammer to make it snap onto the fitting.BIG MISTAKE! Now I can't get the darn thing off!I had to leave the coupling with hose attached to the rear of the compressor. It is now tucked away in the engine compartment until I get another chance to work on it.What a pain!I think I can replace that part by itself but I will bring along a fitting to try it on first.
Sorry for the long rant,
Nelson
