Check the belt tension. I found on my 1984 244DL that when it began making a horrendous racket, it was the belt being too loose.

It may be the compressor, however. The 2-cylinder Yorks is pretty easy to work on. I rebuilt one, but that was 15 years ago, and I don't know if parts are available.

While adding refrigerant did you possible allow the can to be other than upright? If any liquid refrigerant goes into the compressor, the reed valves can be severely damaged. BTDT.
