isolation firewall on fire 120-130 1967

While my car (1967 P220) was parked in the sun for two weeks (yes, it broke down...) somehow the isolationmat of the firewall has been on fire... It have been some pretty hot and sunny weeks... but this is unexpected.!
There's a very distinctive smell in the car and about everything inside is sticky, brown or yellow; damaged by smoke. Nothing except the isolationmat itself is actualy gone. There's no reason to believe that the fire (without flames I suspect) started because of an electrical defect, but I figured that maybe by sun and heat the 40 years old isolationmat caught fire.(?)

Does anyone have any experience or story to tell about this strange incident?

Looking forward to your replies!
