86 volvo 740 running way too rich 1986

Hi all,

I'd appreciate it if someone can help me out.

I have a 86 Volvo GLE non turbo, and it's been running way too rich for the longest time. I can smell the exhaust and the unburned gas smell that's with it. A whole tank of gas only gets me about 150 miles (very poor efficiency). It also idles rough with the engine cold or hot. Sometimes, the RPM meter would jump up and down like crazy. Here are some corrective actions that I looked at already.

1. Sprayed the head with Disc break cleaners - No leaks can be heard.
2. Did the whole Tune up job - Spark Plug, Cap and rotor, wires, fuel filter. Also did the timing belt, changed the oil seals.
3. Checked each of the fuel injectors - they seem to be functioning properly.
4. Checked the O2 sensor and the Ignition/Fuel Injection temp sensor, which goes to the ECU, and they seem to be fine also.
5. I put on a new Alternator.

I've browsed around this forum already, and someone suggested that the Air Mass Meter could be the culprit.

I've once posted this problem and someone suggest the temp sensor, which I tested okay already.

Can any of you guys suggest any other corrective actions? I tried turning the Air Mass Meter to alter the air/fuel mixture, but I don't know what turning which direction does what? (clockwise and ccw) But any way I turned it, it does no effect on the engine performance, as if I havent done anything. I tried messing with the idle speed adjusting nob, and it seemed like it effects nothing also.

Please help! Thanks. Would appreciate it!

Daniel
