Dear sr912,

Good p.m. and may this find you well. The cause might be some corrosion on the caliper pins. This can cause the pad to retract "slowly/jerkily" from the rotor face. The intermittent contact could produce less-than-smooth stops and/or noise.

It is also possible, that there is dirt/brake dust, on the metal "rails" on which the pads ride. That, too, may get in the way of smooth movement.

If one or both of these problems present, the noise/rough braking could occur, just after you've removed your foot from the brake pedal.

The caliper pins may be cleaned with fine (0000) steel wool - to remove corrosion - and wiped with brake cleaner. Then, coat them lightly, with synthetic brake grease. If the pins are deeply corroded, replace them and the rubber boots.

It is most unlikely the struts have failed, unless some "off brand" was used.
