940 Estate--2000cc--cutting out 900 1991

My 940 Estate is a great wagon--out here in the french Alps carrying luggage for ski guests--Ok a bit tail happy in the snow.
Occasionally the car cuts out--wait a while and it would start --but the Emmissions warning light comes on and the handbook says refer to dealer--not an option on both cost and convenience grounds.
Now it happens more and more and clearly the problem is getting worse--I suspect something to do with the cat and assorted sensors.
Anyone got any thoughts on what it could be--can I bypass the cat/sensors as a low cost approach--other than this the car runs superbly albeit with minimum maintenance.
Advice gratefully received.
Cheers,
Dave Cowx,
Ski Soleil.
