How to replace heater valve on '93 940 900 1993

While I had the transmission out (2nd time in 3 weeks, but that's another story) I noticed that one of the heater hoses was rubbing on one of the EGR lines and was nearly rotted through. I ordered new hoses and also a Volvo replacement heater valve. While installing the heater valve, I'm having trouble getting the vacuum hose re-attached to the valve. The old valve was metal and had a metal tube with a 90 degree bend, and the new one has a plastic nipple recessed in the vacuum mechanism and the vacuum hose doesn't want to stay on the new one, any suggestions to keep this hose attached?
