fuel filter repalcement 200 1986

I just repalaced my fuel filter with new copper seals, but there is an issue with connecting the T-joint (graphically: o---) to the high pressure line between the bolt and the filter. Given that I use a socket wrench to tighten the bolt, a crescent wrench to hold the filter, and a pair of vice grips with the same hand to prevent the line from rotating which would otherwise cause to a kink. Doing this while under the car with old hardware (execept the seals) leads to a less than perfect seal. The car does not spray gas when it is on, but there is a slight gassy smell.
1.Is there some kind of sealant I can use to get a tighter fit?
2.Can I (easilly) disconnect the T-joint from the fuel line for replacement?
3.Should I just get new hardware?
4.How much torque is needed to provide a tight enoungh fit?
5.What are the fittings made of (brass?) and where can I get them?
6.Any other (better) techniques to connect the filter to the line?

Thanks always.
Michel
