Failing A/C Compressor 700

1990 760 Turbo Sedan - 216,000

Gotta a new one for you veterans....

On a 200 mile trip today (in 90 F heat), about 150 miles into the trip, I noticed that my A/C began to feel like it was working intermittently. After pulling over and upon closer inspection, I realized that the A/C compressor clutch was only partially engaging with a prominent high-pitched squealing sound. In addition, the front of the compressor pulley/clutch has discolored to a dark "purplish" color!?! (Overheating??)

So.....is the compressor clutch failed? Or is the compressor toast? DIY capable? Any detailed feedback greatly appreciated in advance. Thanks!
