740 Turbo Alternator Woes 700

Remove the voltage regulator / brushes from the back of the alternator (2 simple screws, can be done with alternator still on car - unplug the neg battery cable first) and check that the 2 brushes haven't worn down. Check the FAQ, I think the brushes should be around 5 mm long.

If that's OK, check on the back of the alt. for the terminal marked D- and see that it is secure and the wire (a thin black one usually) is not frayed, as this could cause your symptoms, though the alt. warning light should have come on.

Also check that the alternator ground (usually a thick blue one) wire is secure on the alt. and on the engine block, and that the drive belt is tight.

Good luck.
