A/c system recharge. When topping up from a leak, is vacuuming necessary.

Hi board,
I bought a can of r341a. It came with a can of refrigerant/sealer/lubricant(ester) and a gauge. The instructions said to attach to the low side and then dispense the coolant into the system.
Isnt the theory that if air is leaking out, then some must also be getting in?
And if this is true, then shouldnt it stand to reason that a vacuum is required before 'topping up"?

The reason I ask Is because when I attempted to use this device, when I started to dispense the coolant, at first things started to get cooler, but then it got warmer. And things never did work right.
Since then Ive been told that my compressor is leaking and that I will need a new one. But I need to try to keep my system working until I have time to pull and replace the compressor. I need to get through the hot months in sacramento.
Can anyone help with this.

Thank you

Lawrence
