Auxiliary Fan 700 1990

The auxiliary fan on my '90 745T seized at 270k mi and burned the motor windings. Would I benefit by upgrading to the later 940 style fan? I would be interested if there is a clear performance difference, i.e. larger volume of air moved, and if it is an easy fit. The later fan is more expensive, so I don't want to spend more without a performance improvement.
