Does My AMM Need Repacing ?? 200

Hello. Recently over past week my '86 240DL started acting up. While driving bogs down & not able to reach proper power & rpm. Has happened about 3x times over past week or so. Can be fine for a few days and then problem happens then it goes away. Last time it happened I stopped & turned off car & unplugged & replugged electrical connection to AMM. It was fine thereafter for a day or so. I tryed driving with the AMM unplugged but car ran awful & stalled out. So questions are : Can the AMM be erratic sometimes working right & sometimes not or do they either work 100% or fail 100% ? Should I replace the AMM ? If so as they are quite pricey new what is a good source for a used one ? E Bay ? My local yard will not give quarantee. As always thanks very much for help, advice & insight.
