Timing belts and the rope trick 200 1991

Had to check with the board this morning about crank pulley bolt torque. Hmmm, is it 44 lbs and 60 degrees? 66 lbs and 40 degrees? 66 degrees and a sixteen degree windchill factor makes 40 degrees? Ah, there it is, 44 lbs and 60 degrees (this time I'll write it into the durn Bentley manual--where it is missing). At any rate, I came across all the references to using rope in the #1 cylinder to hold the engine still while removing/installing the crank pulley bolt. I also found all the doubting Thomases who poo-hoo this method. For all those who have been wrenching for ____ years, I just want to say kudos for remembering and spreading the word on this little trick which has been around for decades. Great way to hold valves closed while removing springs or for any process requiring zero tolerance. Much easier than removing flywheel covers, safer than jamming things in the pulley and crushing your lower wiring harness (oops!) and more reliable than compressed air in the cylinder.
