Gasoline and teflon tape? 140-160 1971

Are they compatible?
I've a 142 that was partially converted from FI to carbs, I had to finish the conversion (B head-no Djet parts).
I took the angled fuel pick-up fitting off the tank to see how hard it was going to be to adapt/find something different and I ended up putting it right back on and making the mods from there.
Well, now it leaks.
It's as tight as it was but who knows...I don't think I can get another turn out of it to have it pointing the direction it's supposed to.
Any thoughts much appreciated, it's leaking on the rear muffler (yes, that'll have to come off {again} to get to the fitting).
Thanks,
Shayne.
