Brake lights fail intermittently 900 1997

I have a 1997 960 sedan. I have just found out that my brake lights only intermittently work. All 3 fail to come on at times. It seems if I hit the brake pedal sharply the lights all come on, however, if it is a soft, gentle push onto the pedal, they do not come on. Has anyone had this problem? I assume there is a loose connection somewhere, but I do not know where to start looking. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to start looking and how to fix it. The mechanic couldn't find anything wrong with it. Thanks for any input.
