My gas guage reads 1/2 when my tank is full. 200

Brickboard,

My 1989 240 DL Sedan's gas gauge has started reading only 1/2 full when the tank is full. My wife says that once the tank gets to about 1/2 the gauge starts to work as expected with the needle dropping normally.

I put my hands behind the dash where the gas guage is and jiggled wires. No luck.

I am afraid someone is going to suggest taking the bung out of my tank. I may do more damage than good if I try. My bung is rusted pretty good. Not only that but I painted POR-15 on the whole area to try to keep it from rusting any more than it already is. So it is probably painted shut too.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? Any ideas? Please advise. Thank you.
