Continued odometer problems 200 1989

I have replaced the gears in my 1989 240 odometer and on the bench everything works great. Gears turn smoothly, trip meter and odometer add miles, etc. When I put it back in the car, the speedometer works like always but the odometer still doesn't. Any ideas what the problem can be? I have taken it apart and put it together about five times to no avail.
