940 Runs, stalls, then 'dies' for an hour before coming back to life 900 1992

My wife has a 940 2.3 Sedan - started misfiring yesterday then cut out completely. Turning the key made no difference (battery/connections seem good), no crank in starter motor. Left it for 45 mins and it started up again, enough to bring it back home. I tried this morning - fired up ok, ran for two minutes, then wavered and died and again no contact on turning key.
