1990 760 turbo A/C ?

I have a 90 760 turbo with 200k, She's in great shape, well maintained etc. However, the guy I purchased the car from about 2 years ago was an environmentally friendly chap who claims that at the time of purchase the A/C did not work because he just never got around to giving it a shot of Coolant, I somewhat doubt that this is the only problem to my A/C producing nothing but hot air. The A/C has ZERO chill factor, MY QUESTION IS THIS, is it possible that going to autozone and buying a 15 dollar can of coolant an shooting it up would have me cruising in penguin style or is that an impossibility? Also, wouldnt i need the r12 to r134a conversion or some such thing? I appreciate your reading and advice, sorry its long, thank you much.
take it easy
