cooling system problems 200 1981

I couldn't help but noting your symptoms match mine of one day five years ago. The first suspect was an air bubble, then the replacement thermostat, but it opened fine on the stove, didn't matter if I used the old one or none at all.

The only other variable was the water pump I'd just replaced. This one was actually a local auto parts purchase in a box marked "Airtex" I picked up a year earlier just to get the heater return pipe seal on a Saturday afternoon.

You can see what I saw, that led me to the conclusion the pump would not move coolant at idle. Just look at Ken's thread if you haven't just seen it http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/index.htm?id=980445. The cure was immediate.
