Shift Light stays ON, even in 5th gear 200 1987

On my 1987 240DL w/ M47.... The indicator light almost always indicates to shift up to a higher gear. Heck, it even wants me to shift up when I'm in 5th!!!!

What really actuates the light? Is it vaccuum pressure, rpms, little critters in the engine.....

Of course, I could just pull out the light bulb, like I did on my wife's old 84 w/ M46, but I'm trying to be a purist with this one.

Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks, Doug
