Battery discharge diagnosis

See the 700/900 FAQ for information on this problem in your car.

If the battery is more than three years, old, it could be shot: they usually fail on the hot days of the year or on the first very cold day, both times under real stress. Your local Sears can test it for free.

Culprits can include a failing regulator or brushes, a short circuit, a light left "on" (trunk light is a favorite), corroded battery terminals, etc.

A number of us have had problems with the circuit board on the back of the instrument panel: if part of this fails, the alternator fails to charge the battery. More in the FAQ. Replacement costs about $140.
