I need advice on care of old [and new] rubber parts 444-544

The early 445 has a metal gas filler tube that fits up to to the body with a rubber collar. The tube fits in a slit on the back side and the gas door closes against the outside of the collar. No gas cap. Anyway, I wonder if there's any sort of conditioner that might help prolong the life of an old, cracked rubber part like this or do they just make stuff shiny? Also I think I'll need to lubricate things somehow to get the tube inserted. What kind of lube might I use that I could be sure wasnt going to be tough on the rubber? Grease? Soap? Glycerin? While I'm on the subject of my gas tank, It looks like to get it in place, I will need to slide the connecting hoses and clamps all the way one way or another and then position them after the tank is up. Is there anyone who can confirm if that's the right way to go about it?
