940 Timing question 900

Okay, guys, here's an easy one. I just replaced the timing belt on my 940 Turbo, and I'm 100% certain that the timing marks were lined up okay on the cam gear and the auxiliary gear. The thing is, the timing mark on the crank gear was at about 12:00, and the timing mark on the back of the cover is at around 11:00, so I adjusted the crank, and now it smokes a bit when revved hard. I'm sure it's because the timing is a little off now, but I don't understand why the crank timing marks didn't line up right. Or am I not interpreting the crank timing marks right?
