The steel set is just fine for regular motors. The aluminum is a high-performance thing when we care about minimizing rotating mass -- it's actually lighter than the fiber gear.

I have not seen or heard of that problem, but if Cloyes says so... I always check very carefully for free rotation, lack of binding, etc. at all stages of building a motor, so I assume I'd find the problem during assembly if I came upon it.
