B6304 Timing 900 1991

Finally got back round to assembling the car!
Situation is as follows:

The car is a '91 960 24v
Bought car with cambelt snapped - 12 bent valves
Purchased replacement head from "reputable" breaker
On final assembly, I learned that the camshaft pulleys were the incorrect size. The head I just fitted is a '95. With the camshaft pulley markings in the correct place, I swapped the pulleys with the cars original ones.
The car started (eventually), but there was a slight knocking. As the hydraulic tappets charged up, one or two of the valves must have come into contact with a piston and the engine stopped. I think that when the engine stopped I was using the starter.
All I can suggest is that one of the camshafts is out of sync. Currently, the crankshaft timing mark is in line with its counterpart on the block, and that's where the engine stops.
Can anyone offer advice>
I do not wish to attempt the treacherous job of removing the cam cover if possible!
