front end play and front main seal leak 960 900

I finally changed the oil on the 960 at 7k miles a couple of weeks ago. While I had the whole front end in the air I had the opportunity to check a few things. One is the annoying steering wheel vibration that happens on the freeway. It comes and goes and its not the tires. God knows how many times I've had 2 different sets of wheels balanced. I changed the cone bushings with polyurethane which helped a lot but there is still some vibration. I thought it might be the warped front rotors until last week. With the front end in the air, I grabbed the tires at the 9 and 3 oclock positions and tried twisting it violently. I found about 1/2 an inch of play by my estimation accompanied with a ugly knocking sound coming from the rack! The accordion like part of the steering rack moves in concert with the wheel. I thought the rack itself might be failing until I tried the same thing on the passenger side. There was no play what so ever on the passenger side. What part or parts do I need to change?

The second problem is my front main seal is leaking at little bit. The area right underneath is wet. I guess I'll have to replace it some day. At the moment I top off the engine with about 1/2 a quart every 5k miles.
Thanks for the help
Justin
