catalytic converter 700 1990

I recently had the exhaust from the catalytic converter back replaced but the muffler shop said the cat converter will need to be replaced soon. I don't have emission testing where I live so I'm wondering what will it hurt if I just remove it? The o2 sensor is right in front of the converter so I don't see how that would be any trouble. What are your thoughts, opinions and advice on this? Thanks in advance!
