I was getting ready to leave work this morning to head on home in my '80 245 DL with a M-46. I started the car. All seemed normal for about 5 seconds. Suddenly, the car lost all electrical power. It was all gone. The car was completely dead.
So I popped open the hood, thinking I might find a frayed battery cable or something similar. I didn't find that, but I did find this:

It's some sort of brush pack.
My initial reaction was that it must have fallen out of the Alternator. That isn't the case though because I looked and the brush pack I put in a couple of months ago was still secure. (Also, the alt. brush pack doesn't have a wiring harness connected to it.)
So I followed the wiring harness and discovered it plugged into this metal can looking device hidden behind the passenger side headlight fixture (pointed at with the green arrow):

I looked all over the place but couldn't see where this brush pack would have once plugged into anything.
I looked a big closer at the piece and then realized it was so dirty that it has likely been exposed for quite some time. I positioned it so that it wouldn't flop about too much, and went back to the car. Still dead.
I looked at the fuses. Gave them all a spin. When I got to the top fuse, suddenly everything came back to life, which is odd to me because even if that fuse had blown or had been removed, the car should still run. I started the car and proceeded home.
About a block before I got home, the car did a really strange thing while accelerating. I was in 3rd gear, and suddenly the car lost all electrical power again! Only this time I was going about 30 MPH, and this time the AMP light was glowing brightly while the car was dead and moving. (It was sort of flickering, but not really.) I put the clutch in and pulled the gear lever into neutral for an attempt to restart it, but like magic, the car came back to life as soon as the clutch went in.
I'm very confused, and if you can make heads of tails of this, I would love to hear your take.
First off, I have no idea where that brush pack is suppose to go, or what it came from. Secondly, I'm not certain these events are even related, but it would explain a lot.
Thanks as always.
