Quick ac question 200 1993

the ac works fine when I turn it on, I just can't get it to turn off once I have it on without turning the entire car off. I realized this when my car started to overheat on a hot day last week, so I turned off my ac and cranked the windows down, but the ac didn't go off and the car continued to overheat on me. In my 93 model I have a switch that turns on the ac, just like the hazard switch. I hope that it is not a relay, because it is hard to trace those wires behind that console. Anyway, thanks for any help you can give
