164 (1971) Rear Inner Axle Seal or Not? 140-160

Good morning all,

My 1971 164 is leaking differential oil from the driver's side rear wheel seal. Before pulling it apart, I bought seals, an inner and an outer, because the parts stores said there was an inner and an outer. When I pulled it apart, there was no inner seal pressed into the axle housing, like there was on my 1983 245. The rear inner seal that I got from the parts store doesn't fit and it doesn't look like the place that one would fit in the housing is even deep enough to accept one at all. The big question is, is there supposed to be a inner rear wheel seal or just an outer on this particular car?

I have a model-specific shop manual on the way, but it hasn't arrived yet. There is a Chilton manual sitting around that I could look at, but I was hoping hoping for CORRECT information, not CHILTON information. Thanks in advance and hopefully my stupid questions should taper off soon...

Jerry
