Remove engine and tranny together, replace engine, put back in together? 700 1990

1)Pull the engine and trans as a unit. I consider it a pain in the ass unless you have an engine tilter and then it is not too bad. You really should pull the radiator at the very least.

2) Pull the engine and leave the trans. I do not really care for this angle either and it can be a pain in the ass getting the bell housing and engine mounts to all line up. At least you do not have to deal with the cooler lines.

3) Pull the trans and then pull the engine. This is my preferred way, but I own my own shop and it takes me almost 20 minutes to put that trans on the bench. At this point all you have to do is snatch the engine out and it is not necessary to pull the radiator.

When working at the dealerships for years I don't ever recall seeing someone pull the engine and trans as a unit. I think a lot of this stems from the fact that we all have hoists and are just used to yanking out trannies. We'd pull the trans out in 15-20 minutes and then be on with the engine. Let me tell you though, however you end up doing it an engine tilter is really, really nice. I used one one time and went right out and bought my own. All though it is not the slickest one out there, Harbor Freight sells one for fairly cheap that works great.
