working noisy ac compressor 700 1989

I had my ac converted to R134 last year. It was noisy so the mechanic suggested putting in a rebuilt compressor along with the new dryer, o-rings etc... The noise really didn't change, but it works fine (not great; I'm in florida). Would a NEW clutch eliminate the noise (I'm guessing the rebuild kept an old clutch) or is there anything else I can do to quiet it down. Like I said , it works ok, but I can hear and feel (the added pull) when it engages.
