1987 240 dies @ speed 200 1987

While driving at approx 70mph on the interstate my precious volvo 5 speed lost all power. I had no warning,no strange noises or behavior. Once it drifted to a stop I was unable to re-start it. It initialy turned over like it wanted to start and with the turn of the key my speedometer needle jumped to 60-70mph and drop back to zero. I ran the batttery down trying to coax it back to life. Timing belt intact and I am currently charging the battery overnight. Has this ever happened to anyone else? Any and all suggestions would be appreciated. I have the '87 240DL 152K, '90 740GLE 151K, 2004 XC90 20K
